The fund-raisers

thanks a million

NOVEMBER 2010: The amount raised by the League of Friends since 1973 has now risen to £1,500,000.

IT was a wonderful moment for Leighton Hospital League of Friends Chairman, Mr Peter Andrews, when he received the annual accounts for 2005 - he found that fund-raising had topped the £1 million mark.

More than 30 years of work had resulted in the landmark figure. The League income comes from the shop in the main entrance of Leighton Hospital, and running the ward trolley service, the tea bar and the library service, together with a whole range of money-raising events, donations and bequests.

A symbolic cheque presentation ceremony was arranged - the actual money had long since been put to good use in the hospital - with a giant cheque being received by Mr Simon Yates, who was at that time the Chief Executive of Leighton Hospital. Mr Yates said raising the £1 million was a "tremendous achievement".

He thanked the League for their efforts in years gone by and for the work they continued to do.

Mr Andrews said all the funds the League had raised were used in all wards and departments on both large and small items. That year alone, the League has bought three new defibrillators.
